Support from TÜBİTAK for the Project That will Extend the Lifetime of LED Bulbs
The LED (light emitting diode) technology, which is increasingly preferred due to its much lower energy consumption and longer life than traditional lighting systems, has become indispensable for automobiles as well. However, besides the great advantages of LEDs, the most important problem is that the problem of heating has not been solved yet.
Magnetti Marelli MAKO Elektrik Industry Trade Company and members of Uludağ University Faculty of Engineering has prepared a project to solve the LED heating problem. Innovative cooling systems for vehicle lighting systems will be developed thanks to the project, which is also supported by TÜBİTAK. With the infrastructure and technological knowledge to be obtained within the scope of the project, advanced lighting products with LED technology can be designed, developed and produced in our country.
The project entitled "Development, Design and Prototype Production of Innovative Cooling System for Automotive LED Lighting Products" will be carried out by Prof. Muhsin Kılıç, who is a member of Uludağ University Faculty of Engineering Department of Mechanical Engineering. Asst. Prof. M. Özgün Korukçu from Mechanical Engineering Department and Assoc. Prof. Gökhan Sevilgen will also work as researchers in the project.
LIFETIME OF LED BULBS MAY BE 100 THOUSAND HOURS
The project manager Prof. Muhsin Kılıç pointed out that much longer lifetime and lower energy consumption make LED indispensable for future automotive lighting products and said;
"In addition to the great advantages of LED bulbs, the most important problems that need to be solved are heating problems. The problem of heating in electronic components and LED systems directly affects the lighting function, resulting in reduced efficiency and significantly shortened lifetimes. This necessitates the development of new cooling techniques by conducting research and development studies on LED systems. Due to the high temperatures resulting from heating, the lifetime of the LED systems is considerably shortened. When effective cooling is performed, it is possible to extend the lifetime of the LED over a few hundred hours to over a hundred thousand hours. With the infrastructure and technological knowledge to be obtained within the scope of the project, advanced lighting products with LED technology will be designed and developed in our country and production will be possible. "
